Printfest, Penland & Gingeraid – a trifecta of deliciousness!

Just returned from teaching a one-week class at Penland School of Craft in NC with Cornmeal Press. Printfest was an extravaganza of printing with rubber plates salvaged from the now defunct Morgan Bag Co. in Richmond VA. We explored color mixing, masking, stenciling, editioning and mono-prints and even had time to add a little bookmaking 101 in there! Here are some samples:





A very favorite part of Penland for me is the delicious drink called Gingeraid – served hot or cold, straight or laced, it’s an invigorating and healthy refresher. Orange juice can be substituted with any of these – grapefruit, apple, blueberry, or pineapple. Just say YUM.


1 cup peeled ginger
1 tsp. whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
2 whole lemons, washed and quartered

Combine all ingredients and simmer in 2 quarts of water for 2 hours. Strain out chunks.

While it’s still hot add:

1 cup sweetener of choice (honey, brown sugar, or a combo)
2 cups orange juice

Stir to dissolve sweetener. Serve hot or chill to serve cold.
